Momme (mm) is the traditional unit that tells you how dense and heavy a silk fabric is. This guide breaks down what momme really measures and how to pick the right weight.

What Momme Actually Measures

Momme measures the weight of a fixed length and width of silk. The higher the number, the denser and heavier the weave.

Common Weights And Where They Shine

Lightweight (5–12mm)

Chiffon, georgette and habotai — airy and translucent, ideal for flowing scarves and overlays.

Mid-weight (12–19mm)

The most versatile range: 14mm–16mm charmeuse is the workhorse for printed scarves, blouses and kimonos.

Heavyweight (19–30mm)

22mm and above is the premium tier for silk bedding, pillowcases and structured garments.

Rule of thumb: pick weight for how the product should feel, then confirm print quality with a physical sample.
